President and CEO, BHE Pipeline Group

 

Mark A. Hewett, 56, is president and CEO of BHE Pipeline Group, which is comprised of Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s interstate natural gas businesses – Northern Natural Gas Company, Kern River Gas Transmission Company and BHE GT&S – as well as our minority ownership position in an Alaska storage facility and an unregulated compression services business. Together, the businesses operate approximately 21,200 miles of pipeline with a design capacity of approximately 21.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. BHE Pipeline Group also operates 22 natural gas storage facilities with a total working gas capacity of 515.6 billion cubic feet and liquified natural gas facilities, including the Cove Point LNG export, import and storage facility on the East Coast. BHE Pipeline Group has been ranked No. 1 in the Major Organizational Group in Mastio & Company’s customer satisfaction survey since 2006.

 

Northern Natural Gas owns and operates 14,400 miles of transmission pipeline with facilities in 11 states and access to the major North American supply basins. Northern Natural Gas also owns and operates three underground natural gas storage fields and two liquefied natural gas storage facilities. Northern Natural Gas’ pipeline system has a design capacity of 6.3 billion cubic feet per day.

 

Kern River’s system originates in Wyoming and consists of 1,700 miles of pipeline that extend from the Rocky Mountains to consuming markets in Utah, Nevada and California. The company is a direct link between the abundant Rocky Mountain natural-gas producing basins and western markets, including Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Southern California. Kern River’s pipeline system has a design capacity of 2.2 billion cubic feet per day.

 

BHE GT&S is an interstate natural gas transmission and storage company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, that became a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Energy in November 2020. BHE GT&S operates 5,400 miles of pipeline between New York and northern Georgia, and 756 billion cubic feet of total natural gas storage – along with a gathering and processing business. BHE GT&S also provides a variety of LNG solutions through Pivotal LNG, its 25% operating stake in Cove Point LNG – an import, export and liquefaction facility – and other LNG processing and storage initiatives.

 

Hewett joined MidAmerican Energy Company in 1987 and served in a variety of management positions until 2002 when he was named president of Northern Natural Gas. He assumed executive responsibility of Kern River in 2007, and in 2020, assumed executive responsibility of BHE GT&S.

 

Hewett currently serves on the board of directors for Pilot Company and previously served on the College World Series board for the for nearly a decade. Hewett earned a bachelor’s degree in management science from Buena Vista College.
